Call for Applications: Roma Policy Research Fellowship

The Open Society Think Tank Fund and the Open Society Roma Initiatives
announce the Roma Policy Research Fellowship for young Roma BA, MA and PhD
graduates from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech
Republic, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, and
Slovakia. In its first year, the fellowship program is soliciting
applications from Roma graduates interested to develop their knowledge and
policy development skills in the following topic areas:

*economic policies (with special interest in economic development and
employment policies)
*education policies
*European integration polices
*gender policies
*governance
*local development (with special interest in housing policies)
*public health policies
*social policy
*security and individual safety (with special interest in individual safety
of Roma and prevention of violence against Roma)

Each fellowship may last up to 18 months, depending on the selected topic,
the duration of the internship period and the agreed policy products. The
fellowships will start in January 2012.

Bronisław Geremek Fellowships 2011 - 2012

Topics: The Bronisław Geremek Fellowship program is to foster study and reflection of Polish national heritage in
the context of European tradition. The fellowship enables young Polish doctoral or post-doctoral researchers to
become members of the international, multidisciplinary scholarly community of the IWM to work on a research
project of their choice. The fellowship is open to all academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences;
research proposals related to one of the IWM’s main fields are strongly encouraged. The Bronisław Geremek
Fellows will be invited to spend the academic year 2011/12 at the IWM to pursue their research projects while
working in residence. The fellows will receive a stipend in the amount of € 2.000 per month to cover
accommodation, living expenses, travel, health insurance and incidentals during the stay in Vienna. Furthermore,
the IWM will provide a personal office, IT infrastructure, access to the internet, in-house research facilities and
other relevant sources in Vienna. The fellows will participate in the scholarly community and activities of the
Institute.
Eligibility: Candidates for the Bronisław Geremek Fellowship: must currently pursue a doctoral degree or have
recently obtained a Ph.D. in any discipline in the humanities or social sciences; must be Polish citizens or
permanently reside in Poland; must not be older than 35 years.

Eligibility: Applications for all grants are invited from graduates who plan to acquire a doctoral degree with
a clear historical or sociological focus or a PostDoc qualification with an interdisciplinary focus. The doctoral
grants are offered within the framework of the International Doctoral Programme in History and the

The two year master programmes start in September 2011 and end in June 2013.

Topics: VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries so that they can follow

a master or training programme in Belgium. These scholarships cover all related expenses. Every year,

VLIR-UOS awards up to 180 scholarships to first-year master students and 70 scholarships to training

participants. All programmes are specifically designed for people in positions of responsibility in civil

society (e.g. universities, schools, NGOs, local communities, governments). The target group for master

programmes comprises students from developing countries. Training programmes are tailored to people

from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience. Although these programmes

are primarily oriented towards students and professionals from developing countries, they are also

open to other people.

Eligibility: not older than 40 years for a master programme, not older than 45 years for a training programme.

Herder Scholarship Awarded for Excellent Students from CEE/SEE

Duration: The duration of sponsorship can be up to one year.

Topics: The scholarship is aimed at Central and Eastern European students under the age of 30 and Central and Eastern European PhD students under the age of 35 (PhD students over 30 should give an explanation in their application letter), who wish to complete an academic degree in Vienna.

Baccalaureate studies cannot be sponsored, nor can research visits to Vienna. The amount of money paid out is 920 € per month.

Fully-funded PhD fellowships for graduate students enrolled in the PhD Program in Political Science at
Central European University.
Central European University is a graduate institution in the social sciences, the humanities, law and
management. It is accredited in both the United States and Hungary, and offers English-language Master's
and doctoral programs.

We invite applications from outstanding graduate students for the PhD Program in Political Science

administered by the Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy, and International Relations at

Central European University, Budapest.

The Doctoral Program offers serious in-depth research that prepares Doctoral Students for a life of scholarship
in Political Science. Five different specializations (or ‘tracks’) are offered in the Doctoral Program:
Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Economy, Political Theory, and Public Policy.
The doctoral program is primarily oriented towards academia, preparing graduate students for a career
in research and/or university-level teaching. During their studies at CEU, doctoral candidates are actively
introduced to research networks in their field through participation in major research projects in which
CEU faculty are partners or lead personnel. The Doctoral School collaborates with the following research
centers at CEU: the Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine, the Center for Media and Communication
Studies, the Center for the Study of Imperfections in Democracy, the Center for Environment and Security,
and the Asia Research Initiative.
PhD fellowships
Students admitted into CEU doctoral degree programs are eligible to receive the Full CEU Doctoral Fellowship
for up to three years. The Full CEU Doctoral Fellowship covers tuition and medical insurance and in addition,
full fellowship recipients are awarded a monthly stipend calculated to cover educational and accommodation
costs.
Numerous additional funding opportunities exist, such as the Doctoral Research Support Grant Program, the

  • proof of relevant English language competency;

  • three confidential letters of recommendation;

A fundamental element here is the cultural-academic approach, which derives from the Herder Institute's

the Leibniz Graduate School is open to all projected PhD theses that are specifically designed to make a
substantive contribution to a discussion of the following topics: European Academic cultures and academic
communication from the early modern period to the present: forums, networks, people, generations, forms
of socialisation, political background; National and transnational categories of knowledge and intellectual styles;
Pluralisation, (self-)instrumentalisation, enforced standardisation, transformation of academic institutions;
Concepts and key terms in academic communication: nation, class, ethnicity, identity, gender, religion; Academic
cultures in an age of globalisation and the digital world. The language of communication and of teaching is
